Résumé de l’éditeur
Teobert Maler (1842-1917) is considered to be one of the most active and important expedition photographers of the 19th century. Maler, a German-Austrian was an ambitious pioneer of the still young Mayan research and a master with the camera.
Between 1886 and 1910 he discovered and documented numerous Mayan ruins on the peninsula of Yucatán, which belongs to Mexico, and in the area of Petén in Guatemala. His portraits, cityscapes and landscape photographs are less known.
With support from the Federal Commissioner for Culture and the Media (BKM), 3.000 of Malers photographs, including never before published original glass negatives, have been digitized from the holdings of the Ibero-American Institute and made accessible to researchers and the public.
