Résumé

Around 1830, Lima ceased to exist as a viceregal seat and became a republican city. The old customs were already becoming a memory, yet they remained alive in memory many years later, thanks above all to the costumbrista watercolors of the mulatto Francisco “Pancho” Fierro (Lima, 1807-1879), who sought to reflect—and celebrate—the world he knew in them.

The book brings together a large number of the painter’s Lima watercolors, or those attributed to him, held at the Hispanic Society in New York. The book includes a foldout of the Hispanic scroll, also attributed to him, depicting the Holy Week procession along San Agustín Street, accompanied by a text by Marcus B. Burke, curator of the Hispanic Society. The work is completed with an essay by Natalia Majluf, director of the MALI (Museo de Arte de Lima), on the origin and development of type watercolors, a text that helps contextualize Fierro’s own watercolors.
